But you also have to consider the nature of your shipment: Do you request less loading and unloading procedures? Paying the FCL flat fee for larger shipments is cheaper than the unit price on LCL.

Each mode of transportation has its own limitations regarding the types of items that can be shipped and the space they occupy in containers. Consequently, sea shipping proves to be a more cost-effective choice for accommodating sizable shipments.

Customs clearance in Vietnam

General Import and Export Documents Required for Vietnam

Vietnam custom officials will require the following documents when bringing in goods from China:

Import duty and tax in Vietnam

Most goods imported into Vietnam are subject to duty. Tax rates vary, depending on the type of product(s) you import. Import taxes are to be paid before customs clearance. Late payment risk the success of on-time customs clearance and may also result in higher costs.

Value-added tax (VAT)

In addition to import duty, goods brought to Vietnam are also subject to value-added tax (VAT). VAT rates are either 0%, 5%, or 10%. Certain products, e.g goods that cannot be produced in Vietnam may be exempted from VAT.

0% - Machinery that cannot be produced in Vietnam, teaching and vocational training as provided for by law, humanitarian aid, etc.

5% - Medical equipment, sugar, special-purpose machinery and equipment for agricultural production, clean water, fresh and live food, etc. 

10% - Standard VAT rate for products that do not qualify for special VAT exemption.

Air Freight Service from China to Vietnam

The biggest advantage of airfreight is its speed. Items leaving China can arrive in Vietnam within 1-2 days. This is optimal for high-value items since they spend less time in transit. However, there are a few trade-offs for that speed.

Airfreight is generally more expensive than sea. It’s also better for small items because airlines have weight and volume restrictions. Airfreight also uses more fuel than alternatives, so if carbon footprint is a concern for you and your company ethic, you’ll want to opt for sea freight.

Keep in mind that airfreight normally only involves delivering goods to an airport in Vietnam, not to the inventory’s ultimate destination. Additional transportation accommodations must be made to get your shipment to its final destination. The exception, of course, is if you’ve arranged for door-to-door transportation.
